Pharmacology Futures 2018 - exploring future drug development

Pharmacology Futures 2018 will explore the technologies that will drive drug development over the next 10 to 15 years, with speakers sharing their visions of the future.

During the meeting, the University of Edinburgh’s Cameron Prize for Therapeutics will be awarded to Professor Dame Sally Davies, who will speak on anti-microbial resistance.

Objective
To explore the technologies that will drive drug development over the next 10 to 15 years.

Aims

To understand the role of structural genomics in generating and testing small molecule inhibitors
To appreciate the importance of epigenetics as a target for drug discovery
To recognise the role of stem cells in therapeutics, drug safety pharmacology, and drug discovery
To appreciate the use of biomarkers in guiding therapy
To understand the importance of allosteric drug binding sites for novel drug development
To describe trans-institute approaches to drug development for neurological diseases, using the NIMH as an example.

Abstract submissions

Abstract submission deadline: Friday 16 March 2018.

PhD students, early career researchers* and clinical pharmacology and therapeutics trainees are invited to submit a scientific abstract showing how their work contributes to the ‘Future of Pharmacology’. Authors of the best three abstracts in each category will be invited for oral presentation at the meeting and will compete for a Pharmacology Futures prize. Two winners will be selected, one from each category (PhD students and Early Careers Researchers) to receive certificates and prizes of £250. The authors of all other accepted abstracts will be invited to present a poster.
*Early careers researchers: oral communications - for those with up to 7 years’ full-time equivalent post-doctoral experience as of May 2018

Bursaries

Member bursaries
Bursaries are available to eligible members who are attending and presenting their work at the meeting. Eligible members are generally expected to have been a member of the Society for at least one year and must have submitted an abstract and be presenting in the poster and/or oral sessions at the meeting.

The maximum amount for individual bursaries and will usually be restricted to up to 75% of the aggregate cost of accommodation and travel for students and 50% for non-students. The maximum award is £750. Food and beverage costs and travel incidentals will not be reimbursed. Costs will be based on the Society’s assessment of the most economical mode of travel and a reasonable standard of accommodation.
